Frequently Asked Questions

Window film installation in Sarasota & Manatee County — everything you need to know about comfort, energy savings, film grades, installation, and service area.

About Window Film

What is architectural window film and how does it work?
Window film is a thin polyester laminate applied directly to the interior surface of your existing glass. It works by reflecting and absorbing solar energy — blocking up to 99% of UV rays, rejecting up to 73% of solar heat, and reducing glare by up to 88% — without replacing your windows. The film is nearly invisible and preserves your views. Performance figures are based on Madico's published residential film specifications.
Is window tinting the same as window film?
The terms are often used interchangeably. "Window tinting" usually refers to the visual darkening effect, while "window film" or "architectural film" is the broader category that includes solar control, UV protection, privacy, and decorative films. All of our residential installations use premium architectural film — not automotive tint.
Does window film block UV rays?
Yes. Every film grade we install blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays — equivalent to SPF 285 sunscreen. UV radiation is the primary cause of fading in furniture, flooring, artwork, and fabrics. It also contributes significantly to skin aging and skin cancer risk. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends UV-blocking window film as an effective way to reduce everyday UV exposure in sun-facing homes.

Comfort, Heat & Energy Savings

Will window film make my home cooler in Florida?
Yes. Window film reduces solar heat gain through glass by up to 73%, which directly reduces the load on your air conditioning system. In Florida's climate — where windows face intense year-round sun — this can make a noticeable difference in room comfort and AC runtime, particularly in west- and south-facing rooms.
Can window film lower my energy bills?
Yes. By reducing solar heat gain, window film means your AC doesn't have to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature. Many Florida homeowners see measurable reductions in their cooling costs, especially during the summer months. The energy savings often offset the cost of installation over time.
Will my home feel dark after window film is installed?
Not with the right grade. We offer five film grades ranging from Limo (5% VLT — our darkest, maximum heat rejection) to Light (45% VLT — subtle, nearly clear). Our most popular choice is Medium-Dark at 25% VLT, which visibly reduces heat and glare while keeping rooms bright and views clear. We help you choose the right grade for each room and window orientation during your estimate.

Installation Process

How long does window film installation take?
Most residential installations in Sarasota and Manatee County are completed in a single day. Larger homes with many windows may take two days. You can stay in your home during installation — there's minimal disruption. The film takes up to 30 days to fully cure, during which you may notice slight haziness or small water bubbles — both are normal and will disappear as the film cures.
Do I need to replace my windows to get window film?
No. Window film is applied to your existing glass — no replacement required. That's one of the primary advantages: you get the UV protection, heat rejection, and glare control benefits of high-performance glass at a fraction of the cost of window replacement.
Does window film work on double-pane (IGU) windows?
Yes, most architectural window films are compatible with double-pane insulated glass units. During your estimate, we assess your specific window type and recommend films that are compatible and won't void your window warranty. Certain high-reflectivity films require careful selection for IGUs, which is why professional consultation matters.
Is window film permanent? Can it be removed?
Window film is semi-permanent. It's designed to last 10–25 years depending on film type and sun exposure. It can be professionally removed without damaging your glass if you ever want to change grades or restore the original glass. We do not recommend DIY removal.

Film Grades & Options

What window film grades do you offer?
We offer five residential film grades: - Limo (5% VLT) — Maximum heat rejection (up to 73%) and privacy. Best for bedrooms and media rooms. - Dark (15% VLT) — Deep shade and strong heat rejection (~68%). Best for west-facing great rooms. - Medium-Dark (25% VLT) — Our most popular. Balanced comfort without making rooms feel dark. - Medium (35% VLT) — Lighter comfort with clear views. Great for condos with floor-to-ceiling glass. - Light (45% VLT) — Subtle, nearly clear film. Primarily UV and light glare protection. All grades block 99% of UV rays.
What film is best for a west-facing living room in Florida?
For west-facing rooms — which receive intense afternoon sun in Florida — we typically recommend Medium-Dark (25% VLT) or Dark (15% VLT). These grades provide strong heat rejection to keep the room comfortable during peak afternoon sun while maintaining natural light and views. The right choice depends on how bright you want the room to feel.
Can different rooms have different film grades?
Yes, and we recommend it. We tailor film selection room by room based on sun exposure, window orientation, and how you use the space. For example, a bedroom might get Limo (5% VLT) for maximum privacy and heat blocking, while an open kitchen gets Medium-Dark (25% VLT) to keep it bright and comfortable.
